Overview

What sets PageTurner apart from other modern investing websites/apps is the way it democratizes alternative investments for young people by using a culturally rich asset: rare and collectible books.

The site treats books as one that appreciates financial assets with live market trends, rather than other traditional sites that just focus on buying/selling items only one-time.

Even in the age of AI and digital media, physical books remain highly rewarding. Despite countless texts and prints already being accessible through a screen, younger generations actively crave authentic and tangible ownership.

The interface also translates complex financial data into a clean, intuitive, layout anchored by an approachable and playful brand identity featuring a reading-glasses-wearing tiger.

Problem

Many young people today want to build wealth, but navigating traditional stock markets can feel intimidating, while alternative investments like real estate present steep financial barriers to entry.

At the same time, younger generations are rediscovering a deep love for physical books but lack a convenient entry point to turn this passion into a financial opportunity. Existing platforms like eBay or Depop only facilitate one-time sales.

Because of this, it lacks the financial tracking infrastructure that allows Gen Z and Millennial collectors to view their libraries as growing portfolios, track live market appreciation, or treat literary collections as a long-term investment.

Goal

The main goal of PageTurner is to build a user-friendly marketplace that encourages young people to treat rare, used, and collectible books as appreciating financial assets.

By doing so, the platform creates a community-driven environment where young adults can easily buy, hold, and sell literary assets to fund their future and build a reliable source of income on the side.

Dashboard

The Dashboard serves as the central hub where users track their financial progress and portfolio. To ensure that complex market data feels approachable and easy to navigate, I curated a calming color palette from Coolors.co, in which I utilized tones of taupe, cream, dry sage, graphite, and muted teal to reduce visual cognitive load.

The information architecture is structured for easy navigation and scanning. At a glance, users are presented with high-level financial cards (Total Book Value, Total Book Sales, and Net Profit) to reinforce the platform’s core premise: treating books as appreciating assets.

Below these metrics, a clean Monthly Revenue Chart visualizes historical income trends, while the Recent Books Tracked table allows users to effortlessly monitor individual asset statuses (Active vs. Sold) and their corresponding valuations.

Details of Book

To help young book investors track their assets and trade with confidence, I designed a comprehensive Book Details view. The layout bridges the gap between meticulous item grading and clear financial analytics.

Because a book’s physical condition dictates financial value, it can create anxiety for young buyers and sellers. To solve this, I placed quantified condition metrics like spine integrity and page quality alongside qualitative notes. Transparent callouts about minor tears/text ensure an honest baseline before any transaction occurs.

Financial dashboards can also easily become dry and difficult to keep up with. To keep users engaged, I created a playful, stamp-like “Tiger Certified” paw icon next to the book cover. This instantly signals authenticity while keeping the interface approachable and engaging for a younger audience.

The right side of the screen is dedicated to a clear market valuation trend chart. It highlights the asset’s trajectory, featuring a +33.3% ROI indicator badge to celebrate financial growth. Micro-interactions like the filter buttons switching from taupe to muted teal when active, provide clear behavioral feedback for users.

Finally, to give the chart immediate context, a dedicated Purchase History card isolates three critical financial baselines:

  • Acquired ($300): The initial investment baseline.
  • Peak Market Offer ($350): A historical high mark for reference.
  • Current Value ($400): The real-time valuation which shows the highest peak on the active chart.

Add Book

To make portfolio growth as effortless as possible, the “+ add book” button utilizes a smooth micro-interaction to minimize user friction.

On the Dashboard, CTA triggers a modal overlay, which slightly fades the background dashboard to a dry sage. This isolates the user’s focus entirely on the new task, rather than overwhelming with heavy data sheets upfront.

The pop-up square prioritizes only essential, bite-sized details: Book Title, Author, ISBN/Barcode, Condition, and Puchase Price. This focused and intentional overlay ensures young book investors can accurately update their inventory in seconds, without losing their spatial context within the platform.

Conclusion

Designing PageTurner demonstrated how intentional visual hierarchy and deliberate interactive choices can transform complex financial tracking into one that is an engaging and accessible experience for younger generations.

By balancing analytical data with approachable visual elements like the calming, earthy color palette, conversational layout, and playful verification markers of a tiger logo and tiger paw, the interface eliminates the typical friction and anxiety associated with asset management.

Moving forward, I would love to scale this website by building out the full marketplace interface and exploring how micro-animations can further guide users through high-stakes selling tasks.

Ultimately, this project reinforced the power of user-centric design: when complex workflows are simplified it doesn’t just improve navigation, it empowers users to trade with confidence.
